Canada has decided to change the pace of its migration growth. The country's authorities have announced a new three-year migration plan that aims to slow down the growth of permanent residents. This determination is justified by the tense situation in the field of healthcare, infrastructure and housing. Canada receives a record number of migrants from India, Mexico, Pakistan, and Ukraine.

The Canadian government's migration plan

According to the new plan, the Canadian government maintains the goal of reaching 485 thousand permanent residents in 2024, with high hopes of reaching the 500 thousand mark in 2025. Starting in 2026, the government plans to stabilize the number of permanent residents at 500 thousand, allowing time for successful integration and expansion of the labor market.

It is important to note that this step is a significant shift in migration policy for Canada, which has almost doubled the number of migrants in recent years. In 2015, the country almost doubled its population, reaching a record high of 40 million people in 2022.

The goal of the new migration plan is to "calibrate" the number of permanent residence permits issued to ensure the sustainability of the migration system and promote economic growth. According to the official announcement, the plan also sets out a responsible direction for sustainable and resilient population growth, in particular by addressing healthcare, infrastructure, and housing issues.

An integral part of this strategy is also the recently announced migration program for Ukrainians, which came into effect on October 23. This program allows Ukrainians with close relatives who are Canadian residents or citizens to obtain permanent residence in Canada.

However, it is important to note that the change of course in migration policy does not mean a complete halt to migration processes. Canada will continue to accept new residents, ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of its migration system to contribute to the overall development of the country.
