Studying in Suriname: admission to the university and the necessary documents
Suriname is considered one of the most exotic countries in South America. Dutch is spoken in this country and there are plenty of exciting opportunities for unforgettable adventures. More than 80% of the country is covered in rainforests with fascinating mountains, nature reserves, and national parks. The northern Atlantic coastline has many kilometers of white sandy beaches.
Although the country is considered poor, with a complicated political situation, it is still open to higher education from locals and foreign students alike.
General Information
The adult literacy rate is around 89.6%. It is possible to obtain a degree from teacher training institutes, secondary schools, and vocational training colleges. However, it is very difficult for people who do not speak Dutch to enroll. Many students still attend secondary schools and universities in the Netherlands. More and more are enrolling in American institutions of higher education.
What do I need to do to get into a Suriname university
Entrance examinations to universities in Suriname are compulsory. The admission committee selects applicants on the basis of their examinations and their past academic performance. The requirements for university admission are a high school diploma and an interview. National and state universities have grading requirements.

A secondary school diploma from your home country is a sufficient condition for admission.
Period of study at university in Suriname
The academic year traditionally consists of two semesters. Studies last from four and a half to seven years, depending on the discipline you choose. Technical course from 2.5 years. Distance learning is also possible.
Language barrier
You need to know Dutch for admission. For students with no knowledge of Dutch, a separate, specialized language course with an accelerated language program is available.
Required documents
The documents required for migrant studies are submitted through the embassy to the Ministry of Science and Education. The complete list includes:
1. Application form;
2. Certificate of general health status;
3. Copy of passport;
4. Notarised copy of the birth certificate; 4;
5. Translated and notarised copy of the educational degree document (with grades);
6. 3x4 photographs;
7. Autobiography (CV);
All documents should be submitted in Dutch and English.
Tuition Fees
Annual tuition fees at universities in Suriname will vary depending on the university you choose, your profession, and your type of study. Tuition can be paid monthly, every semester, or annually.
