How to get a work visa

Representatives of certain countries, as listed here, do not need a work permit to work in Canada. All others must obtain a work visa. There are two types of permits: an open work permit and an employer-based work permit. The first one does not oblige you to be employed in a specific city, while the latter is issued based on a personal invitation from your employer.

To apply for a visa, you will need to prepare the necessary documents, complete online questionnaires and pay a consular fee. The cost of a work visa is CAD 150, but additional costs may apply during the application process.

Main document package:

agreement with an employer or official invitation from him/her;

provincial consent;

diploma or other documents proving level of education;

letter of recommendation from previous employment;

conclusion of the medical board;

original and copies of internal passport;

original and copies of foreign passport;

certificates of financial transactions for the last six months;

photographs of a consolidated sample;

booked or purchased tickets;

proof of readiness to live in Canada.

All documents must be translated into English or French and notarized. In addition, applicants must provide biometric data (fingerprints).

Canadian government immigration programmes

The country's executive continues to improve its immigration policy with new initiatives to support and employ foreigners. In 2019, a rural immigration pilot programme was launched to direct immigration flows to smaller and more remote regions of Canada. Its participants may not have a university degree or a high level of English. The only requirements are that you have at least one year of work experience and that you have an employer willing to provide you with a job. In addition, the programme allows family members of the selected candidate to obtain a residence permit in Canada.

The Atlantic Immigration pilot programme provides qualified professionals with the opportunity to find work in Atlantic Canada. The main objective of the initiative was to combat the reduction of the labour force in the region. Candidates are also required to have at least one year of work experience, completed secondary education and a signed contract with the employer. No high level of language proficiency or financial support is required. Both programmes also require provincial workplace approval and endorsement.
